Autumn/Winter 2022 Interior Design Trends and Tips

Whether you’re looking for inspiration to style your brand new home, or you’re simply an interior design enthusiast, the team at Aspect have compiled some of the hottest home-styling trends for autumn/winter 2022.

Bring the Outside, in

It goes without saying that during the wetter and colder months, we spend less time outdoors. This means autumn/winter is the perfect season to bring the outside in – and this can be done in a variety of ways.

Indoor Plants

Naturally, the quickest way to bring nature into your home is through indoor plants! If you’re new to plant-parent life, the Zanzibar Gem has been hailed almost indestructible. Devil’s Ivy and Fiddle Leaf Figs are also great choices. Alternatively, many homewares and interior decorating stores now sell realistic-looking artificial plants.

Natural Materials and Textures

Another great way to bring the outside in, is to have furniture, textiles and décor that mimic naturally occurring textures. Timber, hessian, and stoneware are just some examples.

Let the Light Shine in

Rooms that lack natural light can be very dull and dreary especially in winter. Here are a few tips on how to brighten up these spaces during the colder months.

  • This might sound obvious but be sure to open your blinds and curtains. If privacy is a concern, opt for a wide-slat shutter as it will still allow most of the natural light in.
  • Add mirrors! You can amplify light using mirrors to help spread out the existing natural light.
  • Choose light wall colours. Painting your walls white or light grey is an easy way to give the illusion of more light.
  • Ensure your windows are clean. Clean windows allow more light to stream in!

Shades of Brown

There’s no colour more rich, comforting and warming than chocolate brown – and interior design experts are anticipating it will be a hit throughout 2022 and beyond. Combine it with caramel, tan and camel shades to add warmth and depth to your interior spaces. You can easily add this colour palette to your home with throw cushions, blankets, and simple décor pieces – like a tortoise-shell patterned vase.

Stylish Sustainability

As more and more people look towards sustainable shopping, living and styling solutions, it’s no surprise that thrift shopping for décor and furniture is increasing in popularity. The benefits of sourcing interior pieces from vintage stores and op shops are:

  • It’s more affordable.
  • It’s better for the environment.
  • They bring a distinct sense of character to your home.
  • The next time you’re in search of a decorative item or piece of furniture, try your local thrift shop!

Design expert, Athena Caldrone says: “From a design standpoint, vintage is the protagonist of every room—it has the power to influence the storytelling and direction. Their patina brings a touchable texture and warmth to every space, not to mention a sacred sentimentality. But aside from their decorative propensity, these rare antiquities are stylishly sustainable. By repurposing the old, the damaged, the jagged into something new, we’re reducing our footprint while bringing a rich sense of history and spirit into a space.”

Lots of Texture

From statement boucle armchairs to shag pile rugs and crushed velvet couches, experimenting with textures is a definite trend for 2022. Introducing tactile fabrics is fitting for the autumn/winter season, as they add warmth and comfort to your spaces.
