Waterline Winter Tips

How to Stay Fit in Winter.

It’s now officially been six months since New Year’s resolutions were formed, and if one of your resolutions was to be more active, winter can always be a struggle to maintain motivation. If all you would rather do is curl up on the couch with a hot water bottle this winter, here's a helpful tip to help you overcome the winter blues and stay fit and firing.

1. Remember to explore your own back yard

Ask any of our fiercely loyal locals and they’ll tell you – Williamstown is one of the most beautiful suburbs in all of Victoria. The best way to discover all the magic and wonder of the region is to grab a buddy and head out for a stroll.

Whether it’s through the town centre, along one of our walking trails, or adjacent to the beautiful coastline, Williamstown has a plenty of options for everyone to enjoy.

Start your day with an invigorating walk or jog throughout Williamstown followed by a nourishing café breakfast at a café along the way. Just make sure you remember the way home!

2. Get into the habit of in-home exercises

You don’t need to go to the gym to tone up and get stronger this winter. There are a range of exercises you can do in the comfort and warmth of your home that can easily be incorporated into your daily routine.

Start by learning to plank and then get into the habit of doing one while you’re watching TV in the evening, getting ready to leave the house, or just before you go to bed. This simple exercise will help strengthen your core and leave you feeling great.
Another good habit to get into is stretching. Incorporating a few stretches into your daily routine is easy, and will work wonders for your posture, flexibility, and stress levels.
These simple exercises are fun, easy, and great for couples to do together, so find a buddy and learn together – your body will thank you!

3. Gather some friends and get involved with group fitness classes

If you’re a member of a gym, but struggling for motivation this winter, we have the perfect solution – get your friends involved! Group fitness classes are great fun, a good way to stay in touch, and best of all they keep you accountable. You’ll find that letting yourself off the hook is much harder when you have to say “no” to your friends and fitness buddies.
Round up one or two of your friends or co-workers and sign up for group classes together, you’ll all be amazed by the results!

4. Make yourself some nourishing soup with winter vegetables

The colder months yield some delicious and healthy vegetables that can be combined easily into a roast, soup, or stir-fry to warm you up and to keep those nasty colds at bay! Garlic, ginger, Brussel sprouts, broccoli, kale, and onions are all known superfoods and are in season currently meaning they will all be in plentiful supply.

A delicious soup is as simple as cooking some onion and garlic in oil, then adding veggie stock, potatoes, Brussel sprouts, kale, broccoli, onions, basil, chilli flakes, cumin, and pepper. This will not only warm you up, but the vitamin C that is found in the green vegetables will make sure you won’t be taking your co-worker’s cold home with you.
